John William Tyson, 65, of Herman, Nebraska, passed away on August 1, 2026.
Born on December 5, 1960, John lived a life defined by his dedication to his family, his community, and the values of hard work and service. A lifelong farmer, entrepreneur, volunteer firefighter, and friend to many, John believed in showing up, lending a hand, and doing whatever needed to be done without expecting recognition in return.
John was the devoted husband of Elizabeth "Liz" Tyson and proud father of four sons: Joel Tyson and wife Amy, Zach Tyson and wife Trisha, Cody Tyson and wife Ashley, and Eric Tyson. Nothing brought him greater pride than watching his family grow. He was a loving grandfather to Teagan, Thea, Bryleigh, Isla, Brantlee, Nina, Emerlee, Veya, and Haisley.
John is also survived by his mother, Nancy Tyson. He was preceded in death by, George Tyson, Mary Tyson, and Morgan Allison.
For decades, John was a cornerstone of the Herman community. He served on the Herman Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years, including nearly 20 years as Fire Chief. Whether responding to an emergency, helping with a community event, mentoring others, or simply offering assistance to someone in need, John never hesitated to step forward. He believed that strong communities were built by people willing to serve, and he lived that belief every day. For years, he fought for and supported the Herman ballfield, school, and community events like the Annual Firework Show.
Outside of work and volunteering, John found his greatest peace in the outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting, and he especially enjoyed the solitude of the family cabin in Canada. There, surrounded by quiet water, tall trees, and the stillness he cherished, he could slow down and enjoy some of life's simplest pleasures just like his father and grandfather before him.
In recent years, John reconnected his faith through the Catholic Church in Blair. Those who knew him best would say that long before he ever stepped inside a church, he lived his faith through action: caring for others, serving his community, and putting family above all else.
John will be remembered for his dependability, generosity, sense of humor, and willingness to help anyone who needed it. He will also be remembered for believing that after a long day's work, few things tasted better than an ice-cold Busch Light shared with family and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Herman Volunteer Fire Department, an organization that remained close to John's heart throughout his life.
Though his presence will be deeply missed, the example he set through a lifetime of service, hard work, and love for family will continue to guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
